The Power of Positive Memories

Updated: May 3

Markham Heid wrote an inspiring piece about positive memories. It was

worth posting here for you to read. #MarkhamHeid

I agree that it takes practice evoking

positive memories. Research says we will remember traumatic, even negative, events with greater depth than we do neutral and sometimes positive memories. It’s a safety feature, of course. However, sometimes it can become habit and anxiety, producing and causing a spiral of anxiety and depression and more negative memories. How do we prevent that or reverse it? One can practice positive thought replacement and distraction. Purposefully filling your thoughts with positive concepts, spending all your brain energy in a positive space. When this is done, there isn’t any energy to spend on the negative thoughts. Of course, this easier said than done, but with practice, you can tip the scale and have more positive thoughts than negative. And with enough practice, you truly can default to an initial positive thought, FIRST.
